Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and utterly irresistible cinnamon sugar dusted churros waffles are as easy as they are delicious, and are brought to you today in partnership with the good folks at Rhodes Bake-N-Serv. All photos and opinions are, as always, my own.

I have the ability to cook from scratch and the pantry to support it but it is awfully nice to have a few culinary conveniences in my life. One of my favourite kitchen short-cuts is to use Rhodes Bake-N-Serve frozen roll dough for the eternally popular pizza bialys.

But those frozen rolls do amazing things when given the sweet-treatment, too, as in the case of these 100% irresistible cinnamon-sugar dusted churros waffles. Ohmygosh, friends. These are GOOD.

The hot waffle iron gives the crispy edged, ridges and tender insides that a good, homemade churro has without the fear-factor of boiling oil popping out to splatter on your skin. That alone is good enough for me.

A quick dunk in melted butter and roll through a bowl of fragrant cinnamon sugar renders these churros heavenly in no time at all. Before I knew what was happening, I had inhaled two of them fresh from the waffle maker.

Of course, if you’re equipped with more self-restraint than I am, you can dunk these in melted chocolate like you would traditional churros. Or -better yet, in my opinion- serve them perched on a bowl full of ice cream drizzled with some of the best hot fudge sauce you can lay your hands on.

How do I thaw frozen bread dough?

When using Rhodes frozen bread dough to make churros waffles, you’ll need to thaw it first. Luckily, this is an easy process.

Lightly spray a rimmed baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and arrange 16 frozen roll dough balls with at least 3 inches of space between them. Lightly cover with plastic wrap and let thaw at room temperature for 3 to 5 hours, or until the dough is thawed and doubled in bulk.

You’re all set at that point! If you want to have a more predictable time to cook it, though, you can stash that pan in the refrigerator overnight and bring it out 1 hour before cooking to allow the dough to double.

What makes Rhodes dough so good?

Rhodes was founded by a health-conscious vegetarian man (yes, Mr. Rhodes!) who was committed to using the finest quality unbleached, high protein flour in his bread dough and keeping it free of preservatives and additives. The beauty of their products is that they allow you to have high-quality homemade bread freshly baked by you without all of the mixing, kneading, and cleaning up of scratch baking.

As a committed bread baker, I absolutely still bake bread from scratch regularly, but the Rhodes family of products is a time saving convenience that I feel good about serving my family.

The Best Waffle Maker

In what will be a surprise to no one who knows me, I am FULL of opinions on waffle makers. But y’all, these opinions come from a place of experience.

I have purchased and been disappointed by so many waffle irons over the years, that I fancy myself something of an authority on waffle makers now.

My unhesitating recommendation is for this fantastic Belgian waffle maker from Cuisinart. It’s true that it only makes 2 at a time, but they’re substantial waffles and it cooks them quite quickly.

Yes, it’s a wee bit on the pricey side, but trust me when I tell you that it is worth it. It has already lasted 4 times as long as waffle makers that cost 1/3 as much, it works better than the cheap ones, and it’s still going strong.

This waffle maker easily makes the best waffles I’ve ever had.

If you’re ride-or-die Team-Make-4 Waffles-At-Once, I highly recommend this less expensive 4-slice Belgian waffle maker model which is also from Cuisinart. Are we sensing a theme here? Cuisinart makes great waffle makers.

How to Make Cinnamon Sugar

Sure you can buy it, but WHY? I mean, unless you find an obscenely low sale price on it, you’ll always come out ahead by mixing your own.

Cinnamon sugar is the easiest thing you’ll ever make in the kitchen and can be modified to your own personal tastes. I like my cinnamon sugar to be pretty heavy on the cinnamon, so play with the proportions a bit by starting with half of the cinnamon called for and whisking it in a bit more at a time until you find what you love best.

To make cinnamon sugar, simply whisk together 1 cup of granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon until even in colour. Store in a tightly closed jar at room temperature until needed.

Churro Waffle

Preheat your waffle maker to the highest setting. Spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray or brush lightly with oil.

Lift one thawed dough ball from the pan. Gently stretch it until it is about 4 to 5 inches in diameter.

Carefully lower the stretched dough onto the hot waffle maker. Closer the waffle maker and cook for 1 1/2 to 3 minutes, until the dough is crisp on the outside and dark golden brown to deep brown, as desired.

Use tongs to transfer the crisped dough to a bowl of melted butter and flip it over to coat. Lift and let the excess butter drip away before depositing the waffle into a bowl of cinnamon sugar and spooning some extra cinnamon sugar over the top.

Again, lift the churros waffle to allow extra cinnamon sugar to fall away. Transfer the churros waffles to a cooling rack set on top of a sheet pan.

You can serve piping hot, warm, or room temperature. These are best served within an hour of being made, but can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days.
