£35m Waste Plastic Recycling Centre in Sleaford: Tackling the Plastic Crisis with Pyrolysis (2025)

A bold new plan to tackle plastic waste has been proposed, and it's sparking a lot of interest and debate. Imagine a £35 million investment in a recycling center that could potentially revolutionize how we handle plastic waste. But here's where it gets controversial: the proposed facility in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, plans to use a process called pyrolysis to burn plastics and create oil.

Clean Planet Energy, the company behind this ambitious project, aims to process an impressive 25,000 tonnes of plastic annually, targeting fast-food containers, shopping bags, and plastic films that often end up in landfills or are incinerated. The facility is projected to create up to 70 permanent jobs and an additional 100 during its two-year construction period, offering a significant economic boost to the region.

Pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process, breaks down plastic into oil and gas through chemical reactions. Tom Field, a director at Clean Planet Energy, sees this facility as a crucial step towards addressing the plastic waste crisis on a national scale.

The plant's proposed location is between Pride Parkway and the A17, and it has received support from Councillor Richard Wright, the leader of North Kesteven District Council. Wright believes this plant will not only boost the local economy and create jobs but also significantly benefit the environment.

However, the final decision rests with Lincolnshire County Council, which regulates waste disposal. The public is invited to share their thoughts and comments on the authority's website.

So, what do you think? Is this an innovative solution to our plastic waste problem, or are there potential environmental concerns we should consider? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Let's discuss and explore the possibilities and challenges of this proposed recycling center.
